A New York court has issued a verdict in the case involving newly elected US President Donald Trump and payments to actress Stormy Daniels. He received a suspended sentence, CNN reports.
"President-elect Donald Trump has been sentenced to unconditional discharge for his conviction last year on 34 charges of business fraud related to hush money payment to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign," the article states.
The media outlet notes that Trump successfully used the courts to delay hearings, which were initially scheduled for July, and urged the US Supreme Court to delay the verdict in this case — a highly unusual request that partly relied on last year's court ruling granting him broad immunity from criminal prosecution.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected Trump's urgent request for a delay in the verdict.
Journalists remind that today's hearing is taking place as Trump prepares for his second term as president, while his Cabinet is selecting lobbying efforts to secure support in the Senate.

Trump is accused of paying $130,000 to actress Stormy Daniels, with whom he had an intimate relationship before the 2016 US presidential election, in which Trump won. This payment was made to keep her silent about their affair.
Currently, this case is the only one among others against Trump in the US that has reached a logical conclusion with a verdict. Additionally, two federal cases against Trump were dropped after his election as president, as the Department of Justice stated that prosecuting a sitting president is unconstitutional.
